Horse Trailer Scam

Recently, my husband found an ad for a horse trailer on the Roanoke Craigslist. Doesn't it look great for a 1999 model?! And ONLY $1,500!!!!!

Now, we don't need another horsetrailer. We haven't used our 1995 aluminum Starro since we moved here in 1999. (A horse trailer makes a great moving van.) I've been using the Starro as a storage shed for years.

Figuring we could always use another reasonably priced storage shed, he emailed the seller. "What are you asking, and where is it located?" he wanted to know. Well, he already knew how much the trailer was from the ad, and he wanted to know if it was really in the Roanoke area. Here's the reply to his question. See if you can find some, er, suspicious things in it:

To: John
Subject: Re: Horse trailer
John ,thanks for asking! our '99 EquiSpirit trailer is still for sale! is aluminium made and is in perfect condition, maintenance has been carried out at regular intervals. weights 3,000 lbs and 12 feet total length. also, has ramp, dressing room, 7'8" Interior height, 6'8" Interior width and 11' stall area. sell it because my boy of 24 died 3 months ago in a car accident, a drunk driver hit him and his fiance. he was with fiance's car coming to our home at his little brother birthday. it was my son's first car and brings me bad memories and it is for this reason that I sell so cheap ($1,550).
I travel a lot with my work, and that is why i decided to sell using Online Services of eBay. they would protect both us and also gives you 5 days of inspection. all the documents and title will be arriving at your address at the same time as the vehicle in 2 business days. shipping is also PAID by me so it doesn't worry about.

If you are interested let me know, Eva!
She attached lots of lovely pictures:

Notice the truck's bumper?
The license plate is blank.

And the trailer has a blank license plate, too.

That white interior is really clean.
Doesn't even have any dings or scuffs on it.

Those floor mats look in mint condition.

Even the spare tire is in mint condition!

The ad is no longer on Craigslist. It was already flagged as suspicious when John last saw it. Here's how we knew it wasn't a real ad:

*The description in the email sounds like a cut and paste job from an actual ad.
*English doesn't seem to be the seller's first language.
*"11' stall area" for 12' total length? So the dressing room is only one foot?!
*The sad story about the death of her son (and his "fiance") and the fact that this horse trailer "was my son's first car and brings me bad memories and it is for this reason that I sell so cheap." Uh, how did the son drive the horse trailer????
*The ad was on Craigslist, but she seems to have forgotten that: "that is why i decided to sell using Online Services of eBay."
*The vehicle will arrive in only two business days and she pays all the shipping. Yeah, right.
*Plus all the documents and the title will arrive "at the same time as vehicle."

Wouldn't it take way more than two business days to get this trailer from Nigeria? Because I have a hunch that's where this ad came from.

This scammy ad has been floating around for a while and other sites have noticed. Here's one from February in which she says, "I'm selling it because my boy of only 25 died 5 months ago in a car accident." Wow! She lost two sons to car accidents!? And that site mentions the trailer is in an eBay warehouse in Dallas.

Update: the scam continues. See http://peevishpen.blogspot.com/2017/01/horse-trailer-scam-revisited.html

I'm so glad my friend found your blog. I just fell for the same exact scam. Mine was a featherlite two horse trailer in Provo Utah. "Jenny Cooper" selling her father's trailer for only $1500 because he just died 3 months ago and she has no use for it. She will ship it to me because the shipping is already paid for due to a previous buyer whose financing fell through. After I said sure, go ahead and ship it - I received this: "my neighbors say I'm crazy to ship it without some money first. I'm sending you an amazon link where we can exchange credit card information, then I'll ship the trailer" BUSTED!!

Hello,

I apologize for the delay in replying, the ranger is still for sale if you want to buy it. My name is Jenny Cooper and now I am the legal owner of the 2006 Polaris RANGER 700 XP 6X6 AWD 4WD that I have decided to sell for $1500. It has 700 cc and 3,200 miles. Everything works on the ranger.
This ranger runs and drives as it should and have no problems. If you buy the ranger , I want to let you know that you will have 5 days to inspect it once it is delivered to your address. I have all the documents, service records, owner's manuals and will come with it.

Unfortunately, my husband passed away 3 months ago, and I no longer need it. The ranger was never driven, since he passed away and it was stored properly. The ranger is located in Provo, UT, but the shipping is already paid so you don't need to worry, I had an buyer in your state who couldn't take the loan from his bank after we made arrangements to ship it, and the trucking company won't refund me so I can deliver it to your address if you buy it. If you have any questions about the ranger or if you want more photos please feel free to ask.

God bless you

Just got taken by this same ad only it was a bobcat skid steer. Didn't realise it was a scam until ebay asked for 1000.00 for shipping insurance.
Boy do I feel stupid.

Same exact thing happening to me for a feather lite horse trailer, But she wanted to go through eBay thank goodness for me searching her name looking for a phone number because she tried to sell it to my 67-year-old grandfather and he asked me to look into it when he felt like things were getting suspicious and find him a phone number so they could talk over all the details. We're going to play along and then tell her that we busted her!

It is a scam over and over. That S185 Skid Steer is out there over and over. Time to find this person.

"Hi again,

First of all let me say that the price is firm $1500. I also want to inform you that I am entertaining two other offers for it, so please let me know your decision as soon as possible. The machine is located here in Utah ready for transit and it can be delivered to a designated location of your choice with no cost as I have mentioned in my previous email, I can send it C.O.D (cash on delivery) with a 5 days return policy if it is not as I described. The 5-days inspection period will allow you to check the machine, test drive, verify the paperwork and make sure that it is exactly as I described before making the final purchase. If the machine is not as I described, then you return it back on my expense, but I am sure that it will not be the case because there is nothing wrong with it. Along with the machine you will also receive all the pertinent paperwork already signed by me and your name indicated as the new owner.

If you are you are serious and have sufficient money to buy it, then all I need is your full name and address to make the paperwork, a shipping address and a phone number where the shipping company can contact you for appointment once they reach in your area. I don’t want to offend you, but the machine is priced for a fast sale so please if you intend to apply for a loan or financing do not reply to this message!

To support my argument regarding the condition of the machine, I've attached more photos.

Thank you,
Jenny Cooper"

Hey! I received your e-mail about 2009 COTNER 2 horse trailer. It's aluminium made and perfect condition with ramp and 71” dressing room! Weights 3,000 lbs and 15' total length. The other sizes are: 7'8" Interior height, 6'8" Interior width and 11' stall area, 30” Escape Doors, 4-Wheel Electric Brakes, Water Tank, Saddle Racks, Custom Tack Box, etc. The price is $1,500 (including delivery to your address)
...I'm selling at this low price because the trailer belonged to my husband who passed away and it's bring me bad memories. Now I'm away with my job and I have no time to transact in person, so for this reason I choose ApplePay Services to handle this deal for me. In this way we'll be protected 100%.

I attached few pictures below so if you're interested to purchase the trailer reply here your full name and address so I can notify ApplePay. Once that is done, they will contact you with an invoice to explain you the process.
